You win some, you learn some
Last month my personal training client Dale and I did a 725lb tandem barbell deadlift. We then planned for a couple weeks that we’d go for 800.
The warm-up sets of 135, 225, 315, 405, and 495 were all fairly easy. At 585 we had to do a little work, but nothing too bad.
675 went up strong, but that’s the point we started to feel it. After a little strategery, we settled at going up to 745, which would top last month’s effort and put us in striking distance of 800.
I’ve been training Dale for almost 17 years, and doing life together outside the gym for just as long. We are fully aware of our abilities, as well as our limitations.
745 was a success, but we felt every fuckin’ pound of it!!
As soon as we put it down we just looked at each other like “Fuck, that was HEAVY”
Utilizing the wisdom we have, we knew 800 was not in the cards, but we’re also not little bitches So we put 775 on the bar and gave it a go.
And a go it did not
But now we know. We learned where the threshold is and have something to shoot for again in a few months.
We won AND we learned, and that is absolutely making good choices
